Bali Dolphins Lovina – Meet our dolphins

Bali Dolphins Lovina –  thedolphins history & background

Welcome to the Dolphin Pools at the Dolphin Hotel in Lovina, Bali. The home of our 5 dolphins Gombloh, Dewa, John, Rocky and Rambo!

Our dolphins here are very special. Four of them have been rescued from a Indonesian wander circus in 2003 where they were severely mistreated. Dewa (our current therapy dolphin in our dolphin assisted therapy program) was washed ashore in 2011, heavily injured by a fishing net & corals and rescued by local village people. The village people brought Dewa to our facility and we healed and fed him for month before he got finally healthy again. All our current dolphins couldn’t be released into the “wild” anymore as a result of their former bad treatment and injuries. They are not able to hunt respective survive anymore in the open ocean by themselves.

Now they interact with humans in our pools for play and healing, because otherwise the dolphins would very fast degenerate and often commit suicide. They absolutely need to have daily activities and interactions to stay physically and mentally healthy.
We are absolutely aware of the circumstance that dolphins do not belong  into a pool and should not be forced to do any activities in the benefit of humans. But – at least – our dolphins here are not forced to do so! Our dolphins are very keen to train, play and swim with humans, learn new acrobatic activities and enjoy any kind of entertainment, activities and interaction with humans – you will realize that very quickly when you watch them carefully or you’re in the pool with them.

The keeping of these dolphins is immensely costly and complicated. That’s why our facility must ask money for interacting with the dolphins from our guests and dolphin therapy clients, otherwise we would not be able to maintain this facility and keep it in shape. We are NO FUN PARK – our facility and legal permit is a so called animal conservation facility but we do not get nor apply for any donations or government funds.

In addition to our daily show and interaction, the dolphins are part of a human dolphin therapy program that is changing lives. Children and adults are working with therapists and the dolphins to pinpoint mainly mental illness (autism etc.) and see, if dolphin interaction can lead to a healing progress. Somehow dolphins know instinctively where diseases exists and help the skilled therapists identify the problem and find a way to develop a successful therapy strategy. There is a lot we still don’t know about the benefits of such a therapy, but we’re learning constantly each day. There are no guarantees for healing or immediate dramatic changes, but many people worldwide report significant and also long lasting changes in the clients behavior, body and emotions after interaction with dolphins.

We had our annoying and unpleasant experiences in the past but also still in the present with various fanatic animal activists – especially in the uncontrolled social media world – who constantly try to give us a bad reputation usually with false or non information at all about our intentions, history of our dolphins or the purpose of our facility.

Did you know that researchers believe that:

  • Dolphins have their own language with up to a trillion words
  • Dolphin brains are larger than human brains and have 40% more thinking ability
  • Dolphins have abilities to heal humans that we do not yet fully understand.
  • Dolphins once walked on land
  • Dolphins use sonar to locate items and communicate
  • Dolphins are intelligent creatures who have capabilities equal to or exceeding humans

Gombloh

Gombloh is king of the pool. He is a guardian of his home. You can see him patrolling with his eyes and sensing everything that is going on. He is a warrior, always alert and watching. Watch his head move from side to side as he scans the action around his home, always alert, always watching for danger. He hears you and he feels your emotions. If you are quiet, you can feel him sensing you. Clear you mind and wait and see if you feel his scan in your body. Gombloh is an alpha male who rarely allows strong men in his pool.

John and Rambo are two male dolphins who play together in the other pool. John was the first dolphin to come to the hotel. He was rescued from a circus where he was living in chlorinated water and was blinded. John was beaten, his teeth were broken and he lived in a small pool where he was left to die. He was rescued and brought to the Melka where he has gained back weight and lived for two years. Jack is his younger friend who plays and swims with him and guides him around the pool. Both of them began their lives in the ocean and were caught in the nets of fishermen, a dangerous problem for dolphins. You will see them rough housing and tumbling like young boys in the pool and we take special care when you are in the pool with them for your safety. Dolphin play can be rough for humans so please follow the instructions of the handlers and limit your time in the water or enjoy watching them play from the side of the pool.
